Capitol Hill Block Party - A Look Backwards & Forwards

Capitol Hill Block Party is an annual music festival that takes place during the summer in Seattle, Washington. The festival was founded in 1997 and has expanded to encompass three total days spotlighting both small and large musical acts. Last year, I had the privilege of attending The Block Party and saw a variety of artists such as Betty Who, Sol, Oh Wonder, Dillon Francis, BROCKHAMPTON & Father John Misty.

On the first evening, GoldLink was scheduled to perform but had to cancel his set due to a medical emergency. Sol, a Seattle native, was scheduled to take GoldLink’s place, and as I eagerly awaited the first night’s headliner - I had no idea what to expect. I had never listened to Sol’s music before, so I was in for a surprise no matter what.

Sol soon appeared on stage with dancers, a brass quartet, and started crowd surfing in river raft. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. After Sol finished his set, Dillon Francis wrapped up the evening in traditional fashion - with plenty of bass.

The second day featured Betty Who, Oh Wonder, and the group I was most excited to see, BROCKHAMPTON.

While I’m not all too familiar with Betty Who and Oh Wonder, I knew enough about them both to be sure to check out their performances. Betty Who exuded a ton of energy as she and her crew danced all around the stage. Oh Wonder slowed down the evening to a relaxed pace which made me feel right at home.

Finally, the All-American BoyBand themselves, BROCKHAMPTON, came to the stage. BROCKHAMPTON did not disappoint, bringing electricity into the evening as they performed their latest single “1999 WILDFIRE.”

The final evening was capped off with performances from Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Cashmere Cat, and the one and only Father John Misty.

As the evening came to a close, I wondered what would be in store for next year. But soon, the lineup was announced and it did not disappoint.

I’m itching to get back to the Block Party this year and see so many artists who have made a name for themselves over the last 12 months. Artists like Lizzo, JPEGMAFIA, and Cuco along with RL Grime, Denzel Curry, & Aminé.
