I’ve been traveling so much lately that it’s stopped feeling like vacation, but this trip to Miami was especially productive. I woke up on this particular day excited about the opportunity to conduct my first video interview. I didn’t know what would come out of it, but I viewed this as a chance to learn. My lady and I made the twenty-minute drive from Miami Lakes to El Portal, where I would sit down with up-and-coming rapper L.E.X. I met him twice prior and we vibed well, and I enjoyed his music that I’d heard, so I was enthusiastic to see where the interview would lead.

We got to his nice abode and went into his bedroom, where he had a microphone, two big speakers, and a MacBook open to Pro Tools. It was clear he was working before we got there, but it was refreshing seeing his TV on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and his cousin was there working with him. I got some water while the camera charged (prepare better next time, Armon) and listened to a few tracks he wanted to show. He told us he was working on a tape similar to ‘No Ceilings’ where he’d pick popular songs to freestyle to. He emphasized the fact he had some older, popular hip-hop beats because he wanted the project to bridge the gap between the old and new generations of hip-hop.

The beats were knocking and the bars were very raw. He then played some of his original music off his mixtape ‘Earphone Junkie’ that he’s working on. The more I listened, the more I got the feeling he drew heavy influence from the East Coast. He was a boom-bap storyteller, but could also create vibey music that you sit and relax to. We set up the camera and got to talking. The young man clearly had a lot of wisdom, and his life experiences have very much humbled him while simultaneously generating a hunger to be great. He’s all about the authenticity of his art.

Check out the interview with L.E.X. and stay tuned for the projects he’s got coming out. In the meantime, check out his SoundCloud, follow his social media, and let him know what tracks you like.
