YMCMB Forever

To celebrate Wayne’s album and the movement that was YMCMB as a whole, I threw together this playlist of some of my favorite songs by the artists together.

Tha Carter V recently dropped (September 28) and it has me very nostalgic. This is more than an album, it’s a moment for Hip Hop culture. Wayne is undoubtedly one of the greats of today and all-time. He has influenced and impacted many of the artists we currently know and love, and has the respect of older rap legends who also were movers and shakers in the culture. Amidst the legal battles, teases, snippets, and general confusion, to see him finally get this out was a huge relief for rap fans who waited 6 years for the album. Many people hoped for a Drake feature, but we did get to hear Wayne work again with Nicki and Mack Maine.

It got me thinking about the machine that was YMCMB as a whole. There have been many great groups and labels throughout music, but it is hard to argue against YMCMB being one of the groups who ran music for a period of time. Wayne’s peak of his career gave way to Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Tyga. The first two are some of the biggest stars in music, and Tyga after a few years of misses is rising back to the level he was at back in the early 2010s when he was firing off one good mixtape after another (Black Thoughts and Well Done series). There was also Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine, and Cory Gunz who delivered memorable features over the course of YMCMB’s run. Songs like “Every Girl,” “Bedrock,” “Roger That,” and “Truffle Butter” among many others serve as reminders to us that any time all or a number of these people got together on a song, it was more than likely that a hit would come out of it. Birdman truly had something special going, but we won’t get into all he did to ruin it today.

To celebrate Wayne’s album and the movement that was YMCMB as a whole, I threw together this playlist of some of my favorite songs by the artists together. Wayne and Drake’s chemistry is undeniable, which shows in the number of songs they have together that are on this playlist, but Tyga, Nicki, Gudda Gudda and Mack Maine also show up big time. Check it out, let me know some of your favorite YMCMB tracks, and I hope you’re enjoying this time in Hip-Hop as much as I am. “I’ll be rocking with the team ‘til Carter 9” - Drake, “Believe Me” (2014).
