deep-seated emotion

OMB Peezy has an interesting story, to say the least. Originally from Mobile, Alabama, the rapper moved to Sacramento, California during his middle school years. Imagine that — you’re a young kid from a rural city in the Deep South, and then, just like that, you’re in the Golden State. Jumping in and out of the streets, it is safe to say that OMB Peezy did not have an ideal upbringing. In his latest album Loyalty Over Love, OMB Peezy brings you through his story of struggle, heartache and most importantly, loyalty.

If you’ve never heard OMB Peezy’s music before, your immediate comparison is most likely going to be Lil Boosie. Although Peezy was heavily influenced by Boosie, he still has his own style. Peezy creates his own flow, harmony and beat selection that puts him in his own lane in the rap game. Throughout the album, Peezy brings you soulful beats, hard-hitting topics, and just simply pain. It’s like you can feel the deep-seated emotion through the music. In the track “Hell,” he paints the dark picture of what goes on in the street every day. Peezy raps, “I got that metal on the seat if you try me it’s your turn, It’s hell up in these streets you cross that line then you gon’ burn.” In the the track “Deeper Than You Think,” he states “I went ahead and took my charge thought about running...nowhere to go, but if you hit that cell them folks your bail they aint your bro.”

To think that Peezy is only twenty-one years old and has been through all of these tragic events is hard to digest. As you delve deeper into the album, the same theme comes up again and again. While there are some tracks, such as “Yeah Yeah” featuring TK Kravitz, that hit on a much lighter note, there is still a constant street theme throughout the album. With these new wave of artists coming out, OMB Peezy is paving his own way while still staying true to himself. Loyalty Over Love is beautifully put together, and it highlights everything Peezy does well. Although there are many street albums, there are few that can capture the audience like Loyalty Over Love.
